Botanical description

The tree

This evergreen tree is long-lived and resilient to harsh environmental conditions such as drought, stony ground, and shallow, infertile soils. Its root system is shallow, especially in irrigated areas, reaching a depth of 40-70 cm. The trunk of young trees is smooth and rounded, but with age, it loses its roundness as some parts grow at the expense of others. It is thick, becoming increasingly thick with age, and is twisted and full of veins and twists. The tree typically reaches a height of 3-6 meters, although it can grow to 10-12 meters in some varieties and under certain conditions.

Branches and leaves

The tree head consists of a strong network of branches and twigs , and the leaves are thick, leathery, 2-3 year old, and usually fall off in the spring . The flowers are borne in compound clusters that arise in the leaf axils of twigs formed in the previous growing season.

Flowers and pollen

The flowers may be hermaphroditic (complete) or male (reduced ovary), and the pollen grains are light and are carried by wind or insects such as honeybees . Self-pollination occurs, however, it has been observed that most varieties have a degree of self-sterility, hence the importance of cross-pollination, which is why more than one variety is planted in the same orchard.
