Hard coal , or anthracite, is one of the types of coal that is characterized by its grayish-black color, and has a distinctive metallic luster. It is cohesive, compact, solid, homogeneous or applied coal , with a percentage of carbon in its organic mass 91-97%. It is one of the finest natural coal as a source of thermal energy.

Hard coal is one of the most highly metamorphic (but still first-order metamorphic) coals , with a carbon content of between 92% and 98%. [ The term applies to coals that do not produce tar or other hydrocarbon vapors when exposed to temperatures below their flash point. Hard coal burns hardly with a short, blue, smokeless flame.
