Types of livelihood
God Almighty divided the provision among His servants with His wisdom. He Almighty said in the Noble Qur’an: {And in heaven is provision for you and what you are promised},[1] Among the servants are those whose sustenance is in money, and among them are those whose sustenance is in health and well-being, and others in children and offspring. And besides faith in this, a Muslim must seek to seek and search for livelihood. Therefore, the Muslim must seek sustenance and strive for it, in addition to supplication, trust, and turning to God Almighty to facilitate the doors of goodness and sustenance, and blessing and increase in it. In this article, there are some verses and supplications to bring sustenance and bring forth blessing in it.
Verses for livelihood in the Holy Quran
God Almighty mentioned sustenance in the Holy Qur’an in several verses, and explained in it how the servant obtains his sustenance. Below is a mention of some of the methods of obtaining sustenance as mentioned in the Holy Qur’an:
Asking forgiveness: Where God Almighty said: {Then I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is Forgiving. He sends rain upon you in abundance. He provides you with wealth and children, and provides for you gardens and protection May you have rivers.} [Surat Nuh, verse: 10-12]
Thanking and praising God Almighty: God Almighty said: {If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more}. [Surat Ibrahim, verse: 7]
Alms and spending for the sake of God Almighty: God Almighty has mentioned in His wise Book: {Say, “Indeed, my Lord extends sustenance to whomsoever He wills of His servants, and He ordains them for Him. And whatever thing you spend, He will replace it, and He is the Best of God.” Provided.} [Surat Sheba, verse: 39]
Fear of God Almighty and pure faith in Him, the Almighty, the Almighty: as God Almighty said: {And if the people of the towns had believed and feared God, We would have bestowed upon them blessings from the heavens and the earth. But they denied, so We seized them for what they used to earn} [Surat Al-A`raf, verse 96]. He also said: {And whoever fears God, He will be rewarded There is a way out for him, and He provides for him from where he does not expect.[7]
Famous supplications to ask for sustenance
(O God, I seek refuge in You from poverty, poverty, and humiliation, and I seek refuge in You from being wronged or being wronged.) [Narrated by Al-Albani, in Sahih Abi Dawud, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, page or number: 1544, Sahih.]
(O God, Lord of the seven heavens, and Lord of the Great Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an, so create love and intentions. I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything, You are the first; there is nothing before You And you are the Last; there is nothing after you, and you are the Manifest There is nothing above you, and you are the Inward One, so there is nothing below you. Pay off my debt and free me from poverty.” [Narrated by Al-Albani, in Sahih Al-Jami’, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, page or number: 4424, authentic.]
(O God, forgive me my sins, expand my home for me, and bless for me what You have provided for me.) [Narrated by Shuaib Al-Arna’ut, in Takhrij Zad Al-Ma’ad, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, page or number: 254, its chain of transmission is authentic.]
(O God, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, and I seek refuge in You from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men), [Narrated by Al-Suyuti, in Al-Jami’ Al-Saghir, on the authority of Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, page or number: 2864, authentic. .] It is recommended to pray for it every morning and evening, as the Messenger of God - may God bless him and grant him peace - told him: (Shall I not teach you a word that if you say it, God Almighty will take away your worry and pay off your debt? Say it in the morning and in the evening: O God, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness, and I seek refuge in I seek refuge in You from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.)
(O God, You are the Owner of dominion. You give dominion to whomever You wish, and You take away dominion from whomever You wish. You exalt whomever You wish, and humiliate whomever You wish. In Your hand is good. You are capable of all things. Most Merciful of this world and the hereafter, and Most Merciful of them. You give them to whomever You wish, and withhold from them whomever You wish. Have mercy on me, by which you will make me need no mercy. Who else is you?) [Narrated by Al-Albani, in Sahih al-Targheeb, on the authority of Anas bin Malik, page or number: 1821, Hassan.]
(O God, protect me with Your lawful things from Your unlawful things, and make me rich with Your grace above all others.) [Narrated by Al-Suyuti, in Al-Jami’ Al-Saghir, on the authority of Ali bin Abi Talib, page or number: 2863, authentic.]
(O God, there is no objection to what You have given, and there is no giver of what You have withheld.) [Narrated by Al-Albani, in Takhrij Kitab al-Sunnah, on the authority of Aawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, page or number: 385, the hadith of its chain of transmission is authentic according to Muslim’s conditions.]
Various supplications for livelihood
“Oh God, grant us a lawful, good and blessed livelihood, as you love and are satisfied, O Lord of the worlds.”
“O Remover of stumbling blocks, O Judge of needs, fulfill my needs, relieve my distress, and provide for me from where I do not expect.”
“O God, grant me ample sustenance, lawful and good, without hardship, and answer my supplications without being rejected, and I seek refuge in You from poverty and debt. O God, O Provider of those who ask, O Merciful of the poor, O Possessor of strong and solid power, O Best of helpers, O Protector of the believers, O Helper of those who seek help. Beware of worship and Thine aid we seek".
“O God, if my provision is in the sky, then send it down, and if it is on the earth, then bring it out, and if it is far, then bring it near, and if it is near, then make it easy, and if it is little, then multiply it, and if it is a lot, then bless it for me.”
“O Most Merciful, O One who is aware of secrets, consciences, obsessions, and thoughts, nothing escapes You. I ask You for an abundance of Your bounty, and solace and relief from the sea of Your generosity. You hold the entire matter, and the reins of everything, so grant us what pleases our eyes, and spares us the need to ask anyone else. You are very generous, O Generous One.”
“O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, O Lord of Majesty and Honour, O Judge of needs, O Most Merciful of the Merciful, O Ever-Living, O Ever-Living, There is no god but You, the True and Clear King.”
